Policy & Government Affairs

One of our primary goals at WWP is to advocate for wounded warriors and their families. We work at the Federal level and provide a voice for the thousands of warriors we represent. We keep warriors informed about changes in laws and programs that will impact them and their families. We create, advocate for and help implement legislation that will support warriors and their families long into the future. WWP's Policy & Government Affairs Program works to:

  • Ensure that quality healthcare for the full range of injuries is accessible throughout the transition from active duty service member to veteran status and for the duration of the warrior's life.
  • Ensure that wounded warriors have unfettered access to the range of benefits and compensation programs for which they are eligible.
  • Ease the financial and emotional stresses faced by families with loved ones who have incurred life-altering disabilities.
  • Identify and create new programs to meet the needs of this new generation of veterans.

Recently, we took the lead in advocating for a comprehensive and coordinated national family-support program for seriously wounded warriors. We worked with warriors, their caregivers, and lawmakers in Congress, to introduce a Family Caregiver Bill that addresses the major gaps faced by many wounded warriors and the family members who dedicate their lives to their care. We worked with concerned WWP Alumni and family caregivers themselves to press the House and Senate for the successful passage of this important legislation. On May 5, 2010, we applauded as President Obama signed the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act into law. For the first time in history, families of veterans severely wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan will receive comprehensive, coordinated financial and other support that will enable them to provide these warriors with needed home-care. We also will be actively involved in the implementation of this law.

Another key legislative gain fostered by WWP was the enactment of a law creating Traumatic Injury Protection for all active duty service members. This law created insurance that will pay severely wounded servicemen and women up to $100,000 upon their admission to a stateside military hospital. WWP was instrumental in the creation and drafting of the proposed legislation. Our lobbying efforts successfully resulted in the legislation being introduced and passed by Congress, and then signed into law by former President George W. Bush, in under two months.

We will continue to focus our legislative and government relations efforts in areas that positively impact the quality of life for wounded warriors. This includes continued support for family caregivers; restructuring and improving economic empowerment programs; eliminating gaps in programs and services for wounded warriors affected by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI); and ensuring the provision of high-quality health care, age-appropriate rehabilitation options, and community-based and peer-supported care to warriors.

As a VA accredited organization, WWP can also help if you are in need of assistance with VA benefits. We have experienced staff members to aid veterans with their VA claims.
