Giving Circles

Giving circles are a new concept in philanthropy where small groups make a big difference. The idea is that if you already have a group that gets together on a regular basis, why not do something to give back in the process? A small donation of $10, $20 or $50  at a meeting of a small group of people can add up quickly and turn a small individual donation into a larger result. Keep in mind that each group is different and giving abilities may vary between individuals.

The original Give Back Gang was started by 15 women in Denver, Colorado, who gathered monthly for tea and socializing. Each woman was asked to bring just $5 to each get-together instead of having a huge dessert spread. Before they knew it, bigger checks were being given, and over a year’s time, they raised over $1,000. They now set a donation goal each year.

Here are a few groups that might be interested in starting a giving circle:

  • Friends meeting for tea or coffee
  • Monthly dinner parties
  • Church small groups
  • Parent/teacher associations
  • Groups of coworkers
  • Neighborhoods
  • Military clubs/groups
  • Family get-togethers
  • Sorority weekly meetings
  • Work-out groups
  • Philanthropy groups (i.e. National Charity League, Junior League)

When establishing a giving circle, consider the following:

  • How many people should we invite?
  • Should the sole purpose be giving?
  • Should we establish a minimum donation?
  • Should we invite both men and women?
  • When and how often should we meet?
  • Should we establish a bank account or designate a member to handle checks?
  • How often should we donate the lump sum to WWP?
