Guy McMichael III
Member, Board of Directors
A veteran of the US Army, Guy McMichael, III developed a distinguished career of assistance to his fellow veterans over many years. However, he became acquainted with Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) not in his professional life, but as a volunteer hosting dinners at local restaurants for injured troops at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Bethesda Naval Hospital. The informal gatherings helped foster the reintegration of America’s wounded veterans into the larger community.
“I’m impressed with the caliber of these young men and women, but I’m also aware they need assistance,” says Mr. McMichael, who joined the WWP board of directors in 2007. “Wounded Warrior Project is particularly good at delivering just what they need when they need it.”
A graduate of Harvard University and the University of Michigan Law School, Mr. McMichael enjoys widespread esteem within both the civil service and veteran communities. He began his career in public service as a deputy prosecuting attorney. He later served as general counsel for the US Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs, playing key roles in enactment of 40 pieces of legislation to benefit America’s veterans and their families.
From there, Mr. McMichael moved on the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) where his work earned him the department’s highest recognition, the VA Exceptional Service Award, on three occasions. He also received the VA’s Distinguished Career Award. Among the positions he held in the VA were general counsel, undersecretary for benefits, chief information officer, chief of staff, and chief judge of the Board of Contract Appeals.
As VA general counsel, Mr. McMichael headed one of the largest legal departments in the Federal government with a staff exceeding 600. He also headed congressional relations for the VA and was responsible for the department’s initiatives in veterans’ readjustment counseling, post-traumatic stress disorder, and disability pension reform, among other issues. During his career, Mr. McMichael advised eight VA administrators and secretaries of veterans affairs.
Following retirement from the VA, Mr. McMichael spent two years with a firm specializing in Federal management consulting and software integration. Today he offers his services through his own firm, GHM Consulting, providing Federal management consulting principally in matters that involve the VA.
