Happy Trails: Wounded Warrior Project Joins In Bike Path Cleanup

AIEA, Hawaii, May 16, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Richard Pittman and his family had just finished tossing their last bag on the trash pile when a local man sitting on a park bench nodded in approval toward the suddenly sparkling Pearl Harbor Bike Path and said the words: "Thank you."

Richard, an Army veteran, joined Wounded Warrior Project^® (WWP) recently to give back to the community by clearing litter from one of the country's most scenic parks. All Richard wanted in return was to connect with veterans and relish the gratitude of those who could enjoy their coastline trail again.

"When I looked back at the park, I enjoyed taking ownership in the cleanup," Richard said. "It gave me a spirit of giving back and service to the community we live in. This bike path is ours, and we have to make sure we keep it clean – not just for today, but for our children and their future."

Warriors connected with their community during the cleanup while feeling empowered through helping others. For many, the mission to serve continues well beyond military service.

WWP connects warriors with one another, their families, communities, and life-changing programs and services. It serves warriors with programs targeting mental and physical health, career and benefits counseling, and support for the most severely wounded. WWP empowers warriors to mentor other veterans and live life on their terms.

Army Reserve veteran Alfredo Tovar helped because he often uses the path. It also provided an opportunity to share experiences with other warriors.

"Giving back and doing it with so many other veterans around you is rewarding," he said. "We are all there for the community. My favorite part of Wounded Warrior Project events is usually when everything is over, and we sit around and talk. We all like to meet, tell stories, and be there for each other."
