Wounded Warrior Project Connects Veterans at Chicago Bulls Game

CHICAGO, March 15, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Veterans served by Wounded Warrior Project^® (WWP) recently gathered to cheer on the Chicago Bulls as they faced the Denver Nuggets. Bonding over a love of live basketball, warriors and guests experienced the benefits of connecting with fellow service members in their community.

Nearly 60 wounded veterans and their guests were allowed onto the court before the game, where they took group photos while the teams performed warmup drills. The group was further honored just before halftime, as the crowd roared when "The Chicago Bulls Welcome Wounded Warrior Project" appeared on the marquee. Though the Nuggets took the game 125-107, the group appreciated the action and camaraderie.

"I am normally nervous being around people because of my post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety," said Army veteran Renee Flagg. "But I hadn't been to a game in years, and I love Dwayne Wade. Once I was there, it felt really good to connect with other veterans."

These connection activities support the recovery needs of warriors by reintroducing them to the unique bonds experienced during military service. In a WWP survey of the injured warriors it serves, more than half of survey respondents (51.7 percent) talked with fellow veterans to address their mental health issues.  

WWP staff interacted with attendees and advised them of additional services for their recovery processes. WWP offers a variety of programs and services that assist injured veterans with mental health, physical health and wellness, career and benefits counseling, and connecting with other warriors and their communities. Generous donors make it possible for wounded warriors to take part in outreach activities and benefit from program resources at no cost to them.
