2023 Annual Warrior Survey FAQs

The Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) Annual Warrior Survey (AWS) is the largest, most comprehensive survey of wounded, ill, and injured post-9/11 veterans across the continental U.S. and its territories. The survey data provides a 360-degree view of the warriors WWP serves. Since 2010, these findings have helped WWP, policymakers, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and other veterans service organizations (VSOs) support the greatest needs of wounded warriors. Your participation in this survey is one of the greatest contributions you can make to our mission in support of your fellow warriors. The feedback you provide ensures direct programs and critical services are available, and WWP stays at the forefront of serving warriors’ greatest needs.

NORC at the University of Chicago (NORC) is an independent research organization conducting this study on behalf of  WWP. Additional information on NORC can be found at norc.org. WWP and NORC treat all information received in these surveys as highly confidential.

A representative sample of warriors was selected to participate in the AWS. Selected warriors will receive an email and/or letter throughout the fielding period (May through July 2023) containing their individual survey link and survey ID. Follow the link provided and enter your PIN to get started.

To ensure it continues to accurately portray the needs of WWP warriors, the AWS underwent an extensive, year-long evaluation in 2020. One of the most critical recommendations made was to select a representative sample of warriors rather than asking the entire WWP warrior population to participate. We will follow this same group of warriors every year, making it easier to track trends and changes over time. As more warriors register with WWP, we’ll add new warriors to the sample to ensure that survey responses continue to represent the entire population of WWP warriors.

Invitations will be sent out in phases throughout May, June, and July 2023. Sending the invitations in phases, rather than all at once, helps WWP respond more quickly if warriors need help during or following the survey. If you have not received your invitation email by mid-July 2023, please check your junk/spam folders for an email sent by reply@connect-woundedwarriorproject.org. If you are still unable to locate it, please reach out to NORC by calling 866.895.3685 or emailing surveysupport@woundedwarriorproject.org.

The WWP Annual Warrior Survey includes questions regarding:

  • Demographic information (e.g., age, gender, education, ethnicity)
  • Employment
  • Finances and benefits
  • Military service experience
  • Current well-being, including physical and mental health status
  • Health care access
  • Self-directed violence
  • Environmental and toxic exposures

Your survey responses are confidential, and there are no known risks involved with answering these questions.

Sometimes, people who answer questions about their experiences may prefer to speak with a mental health specialist.

  • If you feel you are in crisis or immediate distress, please call the Veterans Crisis Line by dialing 988 and then pressing 1. You can also text 838255. This is a free 24-hour hotline available to anyone in emotional distress who wishes to speak to a counselor immediately, as well as to people calling about someone else in crisis.
  • If you are interested in ongoing support, we encourage you to consider one of WWP’s mental health programs. Please call the WWP Resource Center at 888.WWP.ALUM (997.2586) to get started.
  • View a comprehensive list of mental health resources available through WWP and other trusted organizations.

Completing the survey is your opportunity to be heard by individuals and organizations who have the power to initiate change. Your feedback will help improve how WWP, policymakers, the VA, and other VSOs can serve you better. To thank you for your participation, we will send you a limited-edition WWP beanie once the survey period has ended.

Yes. WWP wants to stay up-to-date with the challenges you face and the successes you have achieved. By following warriors over time, researchers can study how factors like health status, access to health care, and financial wellness impact their overall quality of life. This information helps shape WWP programs and impacts policy development for warriors like you and for future generations to come.

This survey should take about 30 minutes to complete.

No, it is not necessary to complete the survey in one sitting. You can save your responses and exit the survey by clicking on the “Next Page” button, then the “Save and Continue Later” button at the bottom of the new page. When you return to the survey website, simply enter your survey PIN to pick back up where you left off. Your PIN is located in the survey emails and letter you received. If you can no longer find your PIN, please call NORC at 866.895.3685 or email surveysupport@woundedwarriorproject.org.

No individual names will ever be used in our results. Your answers will be combined with those of other warriors and reported only as a group.

Yes. Information collected is encrypted at all times. Our secure servers use “HTTPS” to ensure an encrypted transmission of your data between your browser and our servers. The survey link is also independently verified by a third party as a secure website.

Results from the 2022 survey and reports from previous years can be found at AnnualWarriorSurvey.com.

Once the survey results are published in early 2024, results will be emailed to all warriors and available at AnnualWarriorSurvey.com.

Your name and contact information were provided to NORC at the University of Chicago through your WWP registration.

No, but your responses and opinions are very important to the development of this overall research. This is a platform for you to express your concerns and voice your needs. If you can, we encourage you to participate and have your voice heard.

If you wish to withdraw your answers once you begin the survey, please notify the WWP survey support center by sending an email to surveysupport@woundedwarriorproject.org. Please include your name and survey PIN in the email.

You can skip any question you don’t want to answer. However, the more responses you’re able to provide will allow us to better track and treat warriors’ most pressing needs.

Your individual survey responses are combined with those from other warriors. This means that neither you nor your individual survey responses will be identified in the reporting of the survey results.

WWP regards your individual survey responses as confidential. However, in the event that NORC identifies a health or safety concern in your survey responses, such as a risk of harm to yourself or risk of harm to someone else, NORC will share your individual survey responses with a WWP staff member who will contact you for a health and safety check.

To thank you for your continued service and participation in this survey, WWP would like to send you a small gift (a limited-edition WWP beanie). WWP does maintain a database of warrior addresses but realizes that your address may have changed since you registered. We ask that you please provide your current address to ensure successful delivery. Once you have completed the survey, we will send you the gift by September 2023.
